TRADITION OF
EXCELLENCE
Boylan-Haven-Mather Academy (BHMA) — familiarly known as “Mather” — comprised four African American boarding schools that eventually became one in Camden, SC in 1959. BHMA closed in 1983.
All four schools were noted for academic excellence and pioneering human rights in a family-like atmosphere.
Like the eagle atop the Mather Academy school building weathervane that inspired its mascot nickname in 1935, BHMA's spirit soars in the hearts and lives of alumni who are proud of the nearly 100 years of service the schools gave to the nation.

The Boylan-Haven-Mather Academy (BHMA) Alumni Memorial Scholarship at Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC helps eligible Education majors pursue their years of study.
This archway (donated by the Class of 1961) on Campbell Street in Camden leads to school history and alumni biography display boards. Private apartments and city tennis courts now occupy the former BHMA property.
SC historical marker on former BHMA property on Camden’s DeKalb Street tells our story. Dedicated in April 2000.
