A Distinguished Legacy of Educational Excellence for African Americans
The four original schools that comprise Boylan-Haven-Mather Academy (BHMA) were founded by the Women's Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the late 1800's to educate children of the formerly enslaved.
This 2004 Reunion booklet chronicles the history of the schools that became BHMA. Included are newspaper clippings regarding the disposition of the property and demolition photos from the archives of alumnus Sylvester Jenkins, Jr. ('49). (Click image to view.)
